I went out the other day to take a picture of the water lily pads that have come up so far this season. Right when I was holding the camera, a goldfinch landed on our waterfall, and flew right away again. I did not have time to focus or zoom. Dang. This is what I got: Here is a close-up. I can’t zoom in closer than that or it gets grainy. As I said before, rats: Around here, I see a goldfinch once or twice each spring. They just pass though on the way to someplace else. I’m happy I was able to get this picture, even though it is not a close-up. I have a lot of different species of birds who come to my pond, and I've tried to take pictures of them all, but the camera is not always with me at the right time. Some years back, a great egret, a bird three feet tall, landed on my roof and looked down at my pond, thinking about eating my fish. That is one time I did not have a camera with me. I did, however, get a couple of pictures of the great blue heron, also three feet tall, who came day after day to eat my goldfish... As I said in this post, I am having mixed feelings about the magnificent Great Blue Heron that’s been visiting our goldfish pond… I had mixed feelings as a birdwatcher on one hand and a Pet Mom on the other hand. But, I got some pictures of him that are on that post. Also see this post that has the solution to the problem: That great blue heron is never going to eat my fish again! X [...]

It is icky and rainy today. But, I just download some pictures I took last week…. Here’s to remembering the nice weather of one day last week: That is my view a lot of the time if it is nice out. It’s also the view out my kitchen window (except for my feet). My hubby built this goldfish pond for me with his own two hands. I’m a fortunate girl to have a hubby that makes me beautiful things to enjoy: An Oklahoman grizzly bear… Just kidding. That’s my dog Belty Boo: Nicki and Belty on morning patrol, checking to see if there were intruders during the night: Lazy bunnies Cadbury and Miss Hudson: First water lily bud of Spring: The same flower a few days later, newly blossomed: My goldfish were spawning this morning. I can’t get too close or they stop. This is the best video I can get under the circumstances. Itsy bitsy baby fish coming soon…. The other plants besides the round water lily pads are the parrots feather that the fish lay their eggs in. Every fall I pull it out because it gets hard and icky in the winter, then in the spring it starts growing back from little bits of roots that are left: Thanks for reading this far down….
One of my favorite books of all time is: Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution by Michael J. Behe: The “Black Box’ is the cell. This book describes the inner workings of the cell. The cell is compared to a major city, with food delivery and trash pickup services. Another one of my favorite books of all time is The Case for a Creator: A Journalist Investigates Scientific Evidence That Points Toward God by Lee Strobel Lee Strobel was an atheist journalist. His wife became a Christian and it blew his mind. Afterwards, he went all over the USA and interviewed scientists about why they believed in God. After interviewing many people who gave scientific evidence for their faith, he became convinced that God exists. Michael Behe is one of the scientists that Lee Strobel interviewed. The Case for a Creator follows Strobel’s journey as the evidence stacks up against evolution and convinces him that God exists. The video below has some of the information that convinced Lee Strobel that life required a creator, and thus there is a God. As you will see in the video, there is an amazing piece of machinery called the bacterial flagellum in some cells. When Michael Behe, biochemist, Lehigh University first saw the bacterial flagellum, he said “this is an outboard motor”: As Behe says in the video: Darwinism was a lot more plausible when we were thinking of globs of protoplasm than it is when we are thinking of molecular machines. Bacteria is said, by mainstream science, to be among the first life-forms to evolve. Bacteria is called “simple life”. Is it really simple? Watch the video and see for yourself. Another concept Behe talks about in his book and in this video is what he calls “Irreducible Complexity”. Irreducible Complexity is where all of the parts have to be together in the beginning for anything to work. His famous example is a mousetrap. He talks about this concept in the video. Charles Darwin said: in chapter six of Origin of Species: "If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down." Is evolution really a fact? Watch this video. You may be surprised. X [...]

This post is in response a comment Greg gave on my post Summary of my website: Reasons Why I Believe in God. What I wanted to say was too long for a comment: Greg’s comment made me think of “Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe” by CS Lewis. It was a philosophical radio address that has been included with other essays and printed in the books Mere Christianity and The Case for Christianity. The essay begins here: The Law of Human Nature … Every one has heard people quarrelling. Sometimes it sounds funny and sometimes it sounds merely unpleasant; but however it sounds, I believe we can learn something very important from listening to the kind of things they say. They say things like this: “How’d you like it if anyone did the same to you?” — “That’s my seat, I was there first” — “Leave him alone, he isn’t doing you any harm”– [and so on.] People say things like that every day, educated people as well as uneducated, and children as well as grownups. Now what interests me about all these remarks is that the man who makes them is not merely saying that the other man’s behaviour does not happen to please him. He is appealing to some kind of standard of behaviour which he expects the other man to know about. And the other man very seldom replies: “To hell with your standard.” Nearly always he tries to make out that what he has been doing does not really go against the standard, or that if it does, there is some special excuse … It looks, in fact, very much as if both parties had in mind some kind of Law or Rule of fair play or decent behaviour or morality or whatever you like to call it, about which they really agreed. And they have. The essay gets more thought provoking as it goes on. I read it before I believed in God. The essay goes on to show that everybody innately knows the “rules”. The philosophical discussion of the origin of the rules is a mind blower, even for an unbeliever like I was at the time. Anyway, I just thought I’d run this up the flagpole. CS Lewis told people what convinced him that God exists. Different things convince different people. Journalist Lee Strobel ran around the country asking learned men why they believed in God after his wife up and became a Christian. He's spending time now telling what convinced him, such as with his book "The Case for a Creator: A Journalist Investigates Scientific Evidence That Points Toward God". And then there is little old me... What would cause people to spend the rest of their life just telling people why they believe in God? What indeed! X My new blog: Life in Our Backyard [...]

As always, when one of my pets dies, I write a tribute as therapy… Moonpie, in the picture on the left below, was the loving mate of Ginger, one of the crippled baby parakeets I adopted. Moonpie and Ginger were the sweetest couple. Ginger had a very bad case of splay leg, a condition where parrot-type birds’ legs do the splits permanently. Moonpie was the helpmate of Ginger in the truest sense of the world. Ginger cannot stand on a perch like the other birds. Ginger stands on one foot and holds onto the side of the cage with his other foot. Moonpie would stand behind Ginger so that Ginger could lean on her. They would stand like that for hours. Here is a post I wrote about Ginger and Moonpie’s relationship: Love conquers all… Parrot-type birds mate for life. Of all the parakeet, cockatiel and lovebird couples I have had since I have had pet birds, Ginger and Moonpie were the closest. They were never apart. Lately, they had been laying on the floor of the cage together. Birds do not like to be on the floor -- they feel more comfortable up high away from the danger of predators like cats and dogs. Even thought my birds have never lived outside, God wired them up with the knowledge of predators so that they could protect themselves. This post talks about the first time I saw them snuggling on the floor together: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…. Anyway, so Ginger and Moonpie have been laying on the cage floor in a snuggle position for the last few weeks. Since Ginger does the splits constantly, the floor is the only place he can relax. When he lays on the floor, one leg goes directly to the right, and one leg goes directly to the left. Moonpie was always right next to him, either laying her head on his back, or laying side by side. As I said, this is very unnatural for birds, but they had come to the point where they felt safe this way. Whenever I would come close to the cage, they would both move up to a “safer” area. But, I have been taking Ginger and snuggling him for a minute, and putting him back on the cage floor telling him he was safe there. Today, as always, they’ve been side by side. But, today they were exceptionally cute because Ginger had one of his crippled legs laying over and around Moonpie to protect her. Moonpie had a long life. She is one of the last of three sets of babies that were “born” here one year about ten years ago. Their parents were Joy, a one-eyed parakeet I adopted and Davy an old man parakeet I adopted from a gentleman being sent overseas with the military. At the most, I had 21 parakeets. Now I have just Ginger, Beady and Gumby (a couple), Shelly, Oscar and Freddie. Freddie and Ginger were both featherless crippled babies I adopted after they had been abandoned from a breeder, apparently, because they were both crippled. This post has a section with more details about that and how I came to adopt them: Please adopt homeless and handicapped pets Beady, Gumby, Shelly and Oscar are the only ones left of all my babies who were born here. Beady and Gumby live in one cage alone. They have to be alone because Shelly wants Beady in the worst way, and literally fights with Gumby over him. Ginger is my only other male. I named the crippled babies Fred and Ginger -- you can’t tell the gender of parakeets until they are grown -- I got them both wrong. Ginger is a boy and Freddie is a girl. I feel very bad for Ginger since Ginger and Moonpie were so close. But, there might be a twinkling of happiness in store for Ginger. Ginger is the only male in the cage with Shelly, Oscar and Freddie. In the past, whenever one of my female parakeets have died, the other females make their move on the widower in no time flat. Beady, for instance, is on his third mate. Parrot-type birds love to be in a couple, and I’ve experienced several couples form after the death of on the the couple’s previous mates. Still, I can’t help feeling sorry for Ginger. He was laying next to her to the end, with his leg curved over and around her. Finally, he realized she was gone, and climbed elsewhere. Goodbye Moonpie. Ginger and I will miss you very much. Will Rogers said this about dogs, but personally, I feel it applies to all pets: "If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went." As I said at the beginning of this post, writing this was my therapy to deal with the death of my little pet. I do not expect anybody to read this entire post. However, if you made it this far down Click Here. Dear God, thank you for letting me be the guardian of my little Moonpie and for letting Ginger have such a loving mate.
First nice day of the year, so….Time to clean the fishpond! My hubby just finished cleaning the fishpond for the beginning of the new season. Each winter it gets all yucky. Then the first nice day of spring my hubby takes the filter apart and cleans everything. All winter, we have had the pond covered with a floating net made for that purpose. It was to keep the heron from eating any more of my fish… ( I am having mixed feelings about the magnificent Great Blue Heron that’s been visiting our goldfish pond… ) This is a Picture of Rick. He is one of the casualties… The fish who are left are waking up, too. All winter they kind of float on the bottom of the pond in a state of suspended animation. They don’t eat all winter long, either. Now, though, they are swimming around near the surface. I even say one boy fish chasing after a girl fish….. and that means more babies! We have lots of room for babies since the Great Blue Heron ate a third of my fish. But, it will be the last time! Do you see the picture of the black fitting up there? That is our new fish hiding place. I found it in a heating and cooling supply house. It is called a Multifit Wye. It is a fitting for heating and cooling ducts. It is now laying at the bottom of the pond. It is about two and a half feet long with an eight inch opening and two six inch openings. I have been trying to brainstorm up a place where my goldfish can hide so that big bird can’t get to them. Otherwise, they are sitting ducks. Woohoo. My babies are safe now! I’m happy! X [...]
